The Art and Exploration

As farrier, trainer, teacher, and ardent philosopher of the horse, as well as lifelong explorer of the meaning of life, lover of solitude, remote corners, sage and pines, my hope is that my art reflects not simply an intimate knowledge, admiration and love for my subjects, but has the ability to draw you into the individual soul of each one and reflect a light and mirror back onto ours. I constantly find metaphors in working daily with animals and the glimpses they offer into a richer understanding of this incredible thing called Life that we take for granted. Expressing this somehow as my art fascinates me.

  I have a long standing passion and reverence for the Old Californio Style of horsemanship with it's smooth and quiet elegance, it is an Art unto itself.  I revel in exploring the depths of communication, refinement, with a commitment to respectful handling of stock and self-awareness throughout driven by presence and awareness. In my quest for finer horsemanship, I rather accidentally fell down the classical dressage and equitation vortex and find it both revealing and anguishing in its ancient beauty and skill.

And so, when you mix these all together you end up with me...  trying to capture elegantly in oil paint, that distant faraway look in an eye, or that one that pierces straight through to your soul, the flash of light on silver adorning the hard working ranch horse, that stillness and ease of a long-time partner...the gaze and undeniable power of the professional bucking or fighting bull...those moments challenge me to convey some of the profoundness and magic I see everyday that stirs my soul.

My work has shown successfully at Kamloops Cowboy Festival, Kerrville TX Museum of Western Art, the Federation of Canadian Artists in Vancouver and The Calgary Stampede, receiving Best in Show there  in 2025.  I have essentially done my old 4-H motto: Learn to do by Doing and as such cut my teeth in this art addiction by creating a great many commissions, happily commemorating those horses and dogs that have brought their humans so much love and connection. My art lives throughout Canada and coast to coast in the US as well as Portugal and Mexico.

I currently call the high sage hills outside Kamloops, BC home and share space with my three Iberian horses,  Great Dane and Dogo Argentino and various paintbrush friends, but I've been known to disappear into the wild blue yonder following the crumb trails of my heart in the Palomino Palace
